MAC Spoofing is the routine of modifying the MAC Address of the Network Interface Card on a network. The rightmost digits specifies unique identification of the Network Adapter. Each manufacturer have their own unique prefixes assigned by the IEEE that identifies their NIC. The leftmost 6 digits (i.e., 24-bit) called a “prefix” and are reserved for the manufacturer. MAC Addresses by convention have following 3 representation formats: Hence, the scope of the MAC Address is locally limited, within the Local Area Network (LAN). A network interface card (NIC) is only a composition of hardware that connects a computer to a network (usually LAN). MAC Addresses are permanent and are burned into the network card itself. ![]() The purpose to represent in hexadecimal is to make it convenient for the end user (humans) to read and understand. ![]() MAC Address is 48-bit (6 bytes) binary number, but is ordinarily represented in Hexadecimal. MAC Address is also called as Physical Address, or Hardware Address. That is nothing but, the MAC Address simply uniquely identifies the network adapters of the machines.
